ABC – What Do You Know?

The ABC look after the broad scope of news, TV, radio and kids programming. A trusted source of information, the ABC is a popular choice for all demographics in their media consumption.

Purpose

Australia’s national broadcaster, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, engaged IE to produce a fast-paced, interactive online quiz based on the new children’s television show What Do You Know?

The core of the brief was to create an online experience that replicates the spirit of the show, turning learning and facts into a fun experience that encourages repeat play.

The Journey

IE conceptualised, designed and developed all components of the What Do You Know? game. In it, children race against the clock across escalating levels of difficulty to answer questions ranging from ‘what are the eating habits of echidnas?’ to ‘who is the villain in Hannah Montana: The Movie?’ The television show’s two hosts, Ben and Dr Rhythm, pop-up throughout the game to either cheer on or sympathise with the player depending on the score.

Solution

TThe flash game has been designed to integrate with the ABC’s API, so that players who are already members of ABC’s online community, Club3, can log in to save their top scores to a dynamic leaderboard. With 3,700 visits in the two days following the launch and an average time on site of almost six minutes, it’s clear the more than 3000 questions are both engaging and challenging the core audience.
