Carlotta Criel

Interning at IE in my last semester of my Master degree in Media and Communications was an incredible learning experience where I was able to combine the various skills I’ve learnt in my degree, professional experiences and personal knowledge.

As a first timer in an agency, I was impressed by the vibrant culture of IE – from Friday night cheese and drinks, team pub lunches, pool table and tennis table tournaments, dogs at work – I found out pretty quickly that IE was an ideal fit for my working expectations.

The open warehouse office makes for the perfect creative environment, teams of developers, designers, testers work cross functionally, producing work more efficiently for clients and collaborating on projects.

I was able to learn about the agile process that drives IE through weekly lunch and learn sessions and benefited from expertise in account based marketing. Through these continuous learning opportunities, I was able to develop my knowledge of tech and the multiple facets of brand management.

The highlight of my internship was collaborating with Jessica Box, brand and marketing manager, on planning, developing and carrying out some of IE’s events.

Initially I focused on the foodora x IE lunch hosted at the Richmond headquarters on November 16th. Challenging the food delivery services, foodora and IE organised a meal drop-off by drone. This unique experience required efforts from various team members and a lot of preparation from invites to set-up which included filming, coordinating with contributing partners and sponsors, and creating the space in the IE garage. This event gave me the opportunity to further my organising skills and utilise them on personal projects in the last couple of months.

In November, I concentrated on organising IE’s annual Movember fundraiser. By “auctioning off” IE team members and what they were offering, for example a three course meal, a rock climbing class or a ride to the Yarra Valley wineries, we raised $5000 for the charity whilst having a great night.

Throughout my internship I created content for Silicon Block Party, IE’s innovative networking event that combines knowledge and entertainment. I worked on footage from previous events, editing interviews and wrap videos for future social posts and participated in planning the upcoming February event.

I enjoyed being able to attend events with the Client Engagement Team such as the Future Assembly Conference or participate in internal meetings regarding events and marketing. The relaxed environment that IE provides encourages every member to work together, discuss and ask questions.

My favourite moments at IE:

Knowledge and content sharing on Slack – from the #recognition channel to the #random one
Participating in the foodora x IE video – directing the second camera on shooting day, working with a drone, having an input in the final product shown at the event
Running a successful fundraiser in support of Movember
Trying a VR mission at the Future Assembly Conference with other IE members
Going for walk and talk meetings around the park
The internship was a great taste of the industry and life at IE, it was an invaluable experience and opened up the opportunity for me to have a permanent position within the team. It truly has kickstarted my career, and I would highly recommend it to anyone reading this today!
